Bolivian President Evo Morales announced his resignation on Sunday, November 10, 2019 after weeks of protests and accusations of electoral fraud. This after the military asked him to retire. Because of this, around 200 people had gathered in Gothenburg to demonstrate on Saturday. They gathered at Götaplatsen and ended at Gustav Adolfs torg.

- First and foremost, it is about showing one's willingness to join and stand up for democracy. We are only guests in this demonstration, we were invited by our Chilean sisters and brothers who have the demonstration, says organizer Andrej Berntsson.

Shows support for Bolivians

On November 11, Evo Morales was granted asylum in Mexico and landed by aircraft in the country the following day. On the same day, Senate Vice President Jeanine Añez proclaimed himself President-elect. This is despite the fact that there were not enough Members present in Parliament to make a valid decision.

- We want to show our disgust at the coup that has happened in Bolivia. The president who has proclaimed himself is not elected, says Andrej Berntsson.

The dissatisfaction with Evo Morales extends as far back as 2016 when Morales lost a referendum to make a fourth term as president. Despite the loss, Morales still ran in the presidential election held in October. After the election, protests and accusations of election fraud began against Morales.

"Hard to call it anything but a coup"

Evo Morales was elected president for the first time in December 2005, being the first of the indigenous people in the post. He was then re-elected twice with a clear majority.

Latin America correspondent Tigran Feiler says it's "hard to call it anything other than a coup".
