“NATO can be embellished, as the German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas does. And you can soberly state: the alliance is losing its integrity, ”said Trittin.

According to him, NATO can no longer ensure the security of the countries entering the alliance because of their increasingly diverging interests.

“In the 70th year of its existence, the alliance is rather just a shadow of itself. NATO is in an existential crisis, ”concludes the parliamentarian.

In his opinion, both the position on Russia and the situation around Iran are indicative of disagreements within the alliance.

“If NATO no longer defends the important security interests of Europe, if NATO members even jeopardize the security of Europe, Germany needs to take more responsibility,” the MP urges.

In particular, Trittin proposes to overcome the “nostalgia for NATO” and develop a strategy for the sustainable sovereignty of Europe.

Earlier, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that relations within NATO were never perfect, but for the alliance to succeed, it is necessary that all its members solve common problems.

On November 7, French leader Emmanuel Macron admitted that NATO was undergoing a “brain death” and that Europe could no longer rely on US military defense.
