From Havana to Washington, and an official visit to a private trip. The Kings arrived last night in the US capital, where they will stay for the next two days, to participate in the celebration of the centenary of the Edmund Walsh School of the Foreign Service of the University of Georgetown, in which Don Felipe attended a 1993 Master to 1995. The celebration is also double, given that in 2019, 20 years have elapsed since the creation of the Prince of Asturias chair.

The visit of Felipe VI and Doña Letizia is private, although they will take part in a gala for 400 guests in Georgetown on the occasion of the centenary of the Edmund Walsh School to which the attendance of, among others, former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, the latter former student and teacher of the academic center.

The Kings arrive in the United States just after completing their first official trip to Cuba, in which the acting Foreign Minister, Josep Borrell, has been very hard with US policy towards that country, to the point of employing, for First time since he came to office, the word "block" to refer to it. "You have to call things by name," said Borrell, who will soon leave his post as the High Representative for EU Foreign Policy.

In recent months, Pedro Sánchez has hardened the rhetoric against the policies of US President Donald Trump, as he made clear in his speech at the United Nations General Assembly in September. This became clear on the 23rd of that month, when the columnist for the Washington Post online edition Ishan Tadoor titled an interview with the Spanish president "the leader of Spain offers an alternative to trumpism".

Trump has drastically reversed the opening to the Cuban dictatorship carried out by his predecessor, Barack Obama. Trump has tightened the requirements under which Americans can travel to Cuba, and limited the possibilities of investment and trade with the island.

The US has also significantly reduced the staff of the US Embassy in Havana - reopened by Obama in 2015 after 45 years without relations between the two countries -, after accusing the Cuban regime of carrying out "sonic attacks" against its diplomats, as a result of which they suffered vertigo, migraines, nausea and memory loss.

Washington never provided evidence of Cuban responsibility in that action. A study by the Government of Canada, whose diplomats also experienced similar symptoms, concluded that the cause was the use of certain insecticides.
