The unemployment rate rose by 0.1 points in the third quarter to 8.6% of the workforce in France (excluding Mayotte), according to figures released by INSEE on Thursday.

France has 2.528 million unemployed, an increase of 10,000 over the quarter. Over one year, the unemployment rate, measured according to the standards of the International Labor Office (ILO), is down 0.5 point.

In metropolitan France alone, the rate also increased by 0.1 points to 8.3%.

For long-term unemployment, ie unemployed persons who say they have been looking for a job for at least one year, the rate is stable over the quarter and down by 0.3 point over one year to 3.4% of the active population. This represents 1 million unemployed throughout France.

By age group, the unemployment rate for 15-24 year olds fell by 0.2 points to 19.1%, a decline of 2.3 points over one year. Those over 50 are up 0.1 points to 6.4% (+0.1 over one year). The 25-49 age group remains stable at 7.9% (-0.6 over one year).

The "halo around unemployment" is also up in the 3rd quarter. These people who want to work but are not counted because they do not actively seek or are not available immediately have seen their numbers increase by 27,000. This halo concerns about 1.6 million people.

The share of underemployment, ie people who want to work more, as part-time employees, is also up (+0.1 point over the quarter), to 5.4% of people employed. Over one year, it fell 0.3 points.

The employment rate, that is the proportion of 15- to 64-year-olds working, decreased by 0.3 point to 65.2%. The participation rate, the proportion of 15-64-year-olds who work or are unemployed, also decreases by 0.3 point to 71.3%.
