13 November 2019The deputy Pg of Milan Massimo Gaballo has requested a conviction on appeal at 6 years and 4 months for Paolo Scaroni, former CEO of Eni and now president of Milan, who had been acquitted in the first instance in the trial with the Saipem case at the center -Algeria for alleged international corruption. He also asked for the conviction of Eni (acquitted at first instance) as a legal person with a pecuniary sanction of 900 thousand euros and for the confiscation of the price of the crime, about 197 million dollars. For the prosecutor, the 7 first degree sentences must be confirmed.

At the center of the process, alleged bribes for 197 million euros paid to Algerian politicians by Saipem, a subsidiary of Eni, to win concessions for 8 billion and 41 million euros on the exploitation of gas fields in the North African country, also through the acquisition from part of Eni in 2008 of First Calgary Petroleums Ltd, a Canadian company that owns a field in Algeria.

According to the indictment, Eni "used the subsidiary Saipem to convey bribes, disguising them as commissions". In the reasons for the first instance sentence, the judges wrote that "there is no evidence" to show that "Eni had at least the awareness and had given its assent to the pactum sceleris between Saipem and Minister Khelil".
