Four days after the desperate gesture of a young man of 22, who set himself on fire in front of a university restaurant in Lyon, a thousand students gathered on Tuesday in front of the Crous of the capital of the Rhône-Alpes region, to denounce the precariousness of student life.

While he is still between life and death at the hospital Edouard Herriot Lyon, burned 90%, the young man of 22 years who tried Friday to end his life by burning himself by the fire received the support of nearly a thousand people Tuesday, gathered in front of the Crous of the capital of Gaul. For about an hour, they paid tribute to the victim, before listening to some students reading the letter that this young man posted on Facebook, just before doing his act. He denounced student precariousness, a result according to him of different government policies.

"He had no income to live on"

His fight is now shared by Bastien Peireira, an activist of the Southern Education Union, who claims that the public authorities "take their responsibilities" on this subject. "It is not normal for students to come to such extremes," he denounces, criticizing "a system that crushes students, precariates all individuals and degrades our material conditions of existence."

The girlfriend of the 22-year-old student, Laëtitia, also wanted to be present at this gathering. She recalls the galley in which lived his companion for several months, he who had "twice redoubled his license 2 of political science."

"He lost the scholarships, the benefit of his home in Crous, he had no income to live," she exclaims. According to the young woman, he would have done this "to highlight what is going on for thousands of students, to awaken consciences".

This gathering was also an opportunity for the demonstrators to make proposals to the government: they ask for the re-evaluation of scholarships, whose obtaining would no longer be conditioned by academic results, or the creation of a salary. student.
