The city of Munich will host in August 2022 the second edition of the European Championships multisport, which include the "Euro" athletics, cycling, golf, gymnastics, rowing and triathlon, announced Tuesday the organizers.
More than 150 medals will be awarded from August 11 to 21, 2022, at competitions held for the most part at the Olympic Park, 50 years after the 1972 Olympic Games in the Bavarian capital.
The Munich Games of 1972 are sadly still in the history of a massacre of Israeli athletes by a Palestinian commando, which had killed eleven athletes, plus a German policeman. Five of the eight terrorists had been killed. The Games had continued until the end.
The first edition of the European Multisports Championships took place in 2018 in Glasgow and Berlin, the German capital only hosting athletics.
"Six sports that participated in the 2018 edition have already confirmed their participation," said the statement of the organizers.
"The Munich project made sense and corresponded to the philosophy of what we want to put in place, told AFP Marc Jeorg, founder of the event with Paul Bristow, with whom he heads the company organizing the Championships of Europe multisports.
"There has not been a traditional application process," he said, "we worked with the cities that were interested, and of course the 50-year Olympic Games project in Munich, and the existing infrastructure was sticking with that. We were able to meet our requirements, which are less important than for Olympics but still require a certain level.
Swimming, which had been associated with the first edition of the European Multisport Championships, is no longer included in the program for 2022.
