Former US president Jimmy Carter is recovering at a hospital in Georgia after undergoing an operation Tuesday to relieve pressure in his brain after falling several times in the previous weeks, an aide said.

The Carter Center said in a statement that there were "no complications from surgery" to relieve the pressure caused by internal bleeding caused by falls.

The 95-year-old president was admitted to Emory University Hospital on Monday before surgery, and "will stay in the hospital for monitoring for as long as doctors recommend," the center said.

Carter had previously been hospitalized for a pelvic fracture after falling in October.

Carter, who was president from 1977 to 1981, was also hit in the head by a fall accident earlier in the month, but the next day volunteered to take part in an activity by Humanity Housing and appeared at the site identified with a black eye and a bandage on the head.
