Erik Helsborn (SD) is behind the exercise. He wants it written into the municipality's guidelines that "all decoration should be of a positive rather than a provocative kind, and that the focus should be on highlighting the Varbergian, Halland, Swedish and European heritage".

- Ordinary people probably appreciate beautiful statues with natural, animal or human motifs rather than art created to provoke.

Think people want to see beautiful statues

He highlights men's colored panties and large blue penis as examples of deterrent art from other parts of the country.

- Everyone may look at this, but it should not be paid for by tax funds.

Important that art is free

Lena Språng (C), chair of the cultural and leisure committee in Varberg municipality, is critical of the proposal.

- I think it's a dangerous way to go. One of the functions of art is to be challenging and provocative, and get discussions started. It is fundamental in a democratic society that the art should be free, she says.

Earlier this fall, the SD-led Sölvesborg municipality decided that the municipality should buy "timeless and classic art" related to the local identity rather than "challenging contemporary art".
