The war film "Midway" has managed its offensive on North American box office, ahead of three other novelties, according to provisional figures released Sunday by the specialized company Exhibitor Relations.

Eighteen years after "Pearl Harbor" (2001), "Midway" returns with spectacular scenes of aerial combat, on another episode of World War II and the campaign of the Pacific.

Directed by the German Roland Emmerich, accustomed to blockbusters ("Indepence Day", "Godzilla", "The Patriot"), the film has earned $ 17.5 million in revenue from Friday to Sunday in the United States and Canada .

Thirty-nine years after Stanley Kubrick's mythical "Shining" (1980), his sequel, "Doctor Sleep", also inspired by a novel by Stephen King, reached the second place with 14.1 million dollars over the same period.

No Jack Nicholson this time in this new concentrate of horror and suspense, but Ewan McGregor in the role of the son still haunted by the murderous madness of his father at the Overlook Hotel.

The family comedy "Playing With Fire", in which firefighters are forced to play babysitters, completes the podium with 12.8 million dollars.

It is ahead of another comedy, more romantic, "Last Christmas", which has amassed for its release, near the end of the year, $ 11.6 million in three days.

These four new features have dropped "Terminator: Dark Fate" from first to fifth place in the box office. The third installment of the saga, still with Arnold Schwarzenegger as a cybernetic assassin, was satisfied with $ 10.8 million in revenue.
