In Bangladesh, eight people were killed, five of which fell from falling trees, and at least twenty were injured. In addition, five people have been missing since a trawler dropped near the island of Bhola.

A total of twelve people are reported dead from the Indian states of West Bengal and Odisha.

The weather pulled in over the Gulf of Bengal late Saturday night with winds of up to 34 meters per second. The cyclone weakened as it entered overland.

"It has switched to a strong low pressure that produces large amounts of rain," says Ayesha Khatun at the Bangladesh Meteorological Institute.

More than 2 million people were evacuated

About 2.1 million people in Bangladesh had been evacuated to cyclone protection. Ports were closed and air traffic was canceled.

Also in India, air and ferry services were canceled. Nearly 120,000 people evacuated could begin returning to their homes when the cyclone weakened, according to authorities.
