February 9, 2020. This is the date set by the Cameroonian authorities for the legislative and municipal elections. The presidential decree was signed Sunday. Initially planned for 2018, these elections have already been postponed twice. They are eagerly awaited and intervene in a troubled security context and a political landscape that has evolved.

First issue of this election, participation in the two English-speaking regions. The conflict between separatists and the Cameroonian armed forces has already killed 3,000 people in two years, according to NGOs. Consequence: between 5 and 15% of voters only voted in these two regions in the presidential election.

What will happen this time? " The conditions for holding these elections are met, " says Grégoire Owona, Deputy Secretary General of the ruling party.

Another challenge: will the future Assembly reflect the developments on the opposition side during the presidential election? In particular, the rise of the MRC. His candidate Maurice Kamto came second, according to the official results, but his party has only one seat in the outgoing assembly that dates from 2013. Will he confirm his breakthrough?

Same question for Cabral Libii, newcomer to the landscape and third place in the presidential election.

For the SDF John Fru Ndi on the other hand the goal will be to reverse the trend. His party is the first opposition force in the outgoing assembly, but has had a setback in the presidential election with just over 3 percent. In particular, he would have paid the high rate of abstention observed in his strongholds, located in the English-speaking zone.
