Bolivian President Evo Morales announced Sunday, November 10, his resignation after three weeks of strong protests against his re-election to a fourth term and while the army and police had just asked him to leave office.

Evo Morales finally gave in. " I give up my position as president, " said Sunday the 60-year-old indigenous leader, who has been in power since 2006.

This announcement came less than an hour after the army called for his departure. "After having analyzed the internal conflict situation, we ask the president to give up his presidential term in order to allow the pacification and the maintenance of the stability, for the good of our Bolivia, " General Williams Kaliman told the press.

For three weeks, Bolivia has been the scene of a massive protest against the re-election of Evo Morales to a fourth term, following a ballot for which the Organization of American States (OAS) has noted numerous irregularities. This Sunday, under pressure from the street, the president had called for new elections.
