01 September 2018Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva cannot present himself as a candidate for the presidency of Brazil in the elections next 7 October. This was decided by the Brazilian Supreme Electoral Court (Tse), accepting the appeals lodged against Lula, due to its criminal conviction for corruption and money laundering, for 6 votes against 1.

The Brazilian Workers' Party promises to fight "by all means, in the streets, among the people, so that Ignacio Lula da Silva receives the rights guaranteed by the law and international treaties ratified by Brazil".

The note comes after the Brazilian Supreme Electoral Court (TSE) has established that the former head of state will not be able to be a candidate for the presidential elections next October following his conviction for corruption. Lula's lawyers had already indicated that they would appeal to the Supreme Court in the event of a rejection by the Tse.

Lula, 72, has been in prison since last April, sentenced to 12 years for accepting bribes, but for many Brazilians he remains one of the few leaders able to lead the Brazilian giant.
