November 06, 2019The President-elect of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has chosen Adina Valean as Commissioner for Romania, giving her the portfolio of Transportation. This was announced by a spokesman for von der Leyen's transition team.

Romania had indicated two candidate commissioners today. In addition to Valean, who is chairman of the Industry Committee at the European Parliament, Bucharest appointed Siegfried Muresan. Both are members of the EPP and members of the Partidul National Liberal of Romanian Prime Minister Ludovic Orban.

Von der Leyen's spokesman explained that Valean was chosen as "experienced MEP", in particular on issues related to the Transport portfolio. Furthermore, the choice of a woman makes it possible to get closer to the goal of gender equality in the next Commission.
