Mexican international Carlos Vela, MLS top scorer with Los Angeles FC (36 goals), received the 2019 North American Football Championship top player trophy on Monday, ahead of Sweden's Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The Mexican striker got more than 69% of the vote, far ahead of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Los Angeles Galaxy, second with only 14.1% of votes.

Vela, 30, was honored at a ceremony in Los Angeles. With two goals and one assist, Los Angeles FC beat the Los Angeles Galaxy in play-offs.

But Vela's team lost in the Western Conference final to Seattle Souders (3-1) and will not play in the championship final on November 10 in Seattle.

Les Souders will face Canada's Toronto FC defending champion Atlanta United in the Eastern Conference final (2-1).

For Los Angeles FC, the Vela MVP Trophy, which competed at the last World Cup in Russia with Mexico, was added to the best coach of the year by Bob Bradley for the third year in a row. Finally, Los Angeles FC also received the trophy for the best team of the regular season.
