In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), an officer in the fight against Ebola was killed on Saturday evening, 2 November, by gunmen. The assassination took place in the village of Lwemba, near the town of Mambasa, in Ituri province. Mai Mai militias are singled out.

Papy Mumbere Mahamba, 35 years old, hosted an Ebola show on Lwemba community radio and was involved in the fight against Ebola. He was murdered at his home.

" A group of incivists, assimilated to the Mai Mai Mazembe group raided the house. They first took him and tortured him. Then, they hurt his wife. His child, aged 16, managed to escape. After that, they took the victim back, brought him to a hundred meters from his plot and there, they stabbed him, "said Franklin Yakani, interim administrator of the territory of Mambasa, joined by RFI.

In this province of Ituri, in the east of the country, which is particularly affected by the epidemic, awareness-raising actions carried out by the response teams are facing resistance from part of the population and violence organized by armed groups, including Mai Mai militia. Nevertheless, according to Franklin Yakani, these groups are exploiting this popular resistance especially to settle in Ituri, while they operate mainly in the neighboring province of North Kivu.
