A French soldier was killed during an operation Saturday, November 2 in the morning in Mali, after "the outbreak of an improvised explosive device at the passage of his armored vehicle," announced the Elysee in a statement.

The victim, Brigadier Ronan Pointeau, was part of the 1st Spahis Regiment of Valencia.

Emmanuel Macron praised the "sacrifice" of the soldier, and expressed "his thoughts to his comrades engaged in operations in the Sahel", "and their brothers-in-arms Sahelian armies, who pay a heavy price in the fight against the terrorism".

The president also assured "of the full solidarity of the Nation in these painful circumstances".

The Minister of the Armies, Florence Parly has announced that it would go "very soon to Mali, in order to hold discussions with the Malian authorities".

According to her, Brigadier Ronan Pointeau succumbed to his injuries "after the explosion of an improvised explosive device near Menaka in Mali", near the border with Niger.

"In a degraded security context, the death of Brigadier Ronan Pointeau shows us that the fight against the terrorist groups that are raging in the Sahel is not over and our determination to pursue it is complete," the minister said in a statement.
