Election Control Authority President Mohamed Chorfi announced on Saturday (November 2nd) the names of the five candidates for the December 12 Algerian presidential election.

They are former Prime Ministers Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Ali Benflis, former Minister of Culture Azzedddine Mihoubi, former Minister of Tourism Abdelkader Bengrina and Abdelaziz Belaid, leader of the Front El Mostakbal party.

"Today we celebrate the first operation of free and democratic selection of presidential candidates, which belies those who have questioned the ability of the Authority to carry out its mission and those who have criticized the choice to go to elections. to bring the country out of the terrifying situation in which some malicious people want to keep it, "said Mohammed Chorfi.

Renewal of the ruling class

Twenty-three candidates had applied to the authority, but most did not meet the requirements, including the collection of signatures. Those whose application has been rejected may appeal.

While the Algerians are mobilizing en masse across the country to demand a complete renewal of the ruling class, the Algerian authorities keep saying that the presidential election of December 12 will be the only way out of the crisis since the resignation of the President Abdelaziz Bouteflika in April, under pressure from the street.

Abdelaziz Bouteflika resigned last April, after spending twenty years as head of the country, giving in to pressure from the army after weeks of street protests for change.

Despite his resignation, the protesters continued their movement by demanding the departure of the elite who has led the country since independence in 1962.
