Ten people were killed Thursday (October 31st) in an attack attributed to Islamist insurgents in the extreme north of Mozambique.

Gunmen ambushed a road near the village of Mbau in Cabo Delgado province, targeting a truck carrying passengers and goods.

" The vehicle got stuck on a sandy road and suddenly unidentified people started shooting at us, " a wounded witness told AFP.

The assessment was confirmed by a villager contacted by AFP. " The situation is deteriorating. People are leaving their villages "for the city of Mocimboa, in Cabo Delgado province, he said, saying that" attacks have increased since the elections "on 15 October.

The vehicle targeted by the ambush Thursday was totally burned. The attackers then looted houses and stole food, according to both sources.

Armed groups have been reigning terror for two years in this region of northern Mozambique. These attacks left at least 300 civilians dead and tens of thousands displaced.

In early October, the Mozambican ministry announced, exceptional, the death of nine Islamist insurgents in fighting with the army in the far north of the country, recognizing that clashes between the mysterious jihadist group and the military.

The Shebabs did not claim any of the operations assigned to them. The Islamic State (IS) group has recently been the author of several attacks in Mozambique, but many experts remain skeptical about its influence in the region.
