January 21, 2015The founder of the Islamophobic movement Pegida, Lutz Bachmann, resigned as leader after the controversy raised by one of his photos posing as Adolf Hitler.

"I'm resigning from the board," Bachmann said, according to Bild newspaper on his online site. Pegida spokeswoman Kathrin Oertel said: "I confirm the news".

A photo of 41-year-old Bachmann disguised as Hitler with a mustache, has been around the world on social networks and today has been published by Bild, causing another wave of protests and confirming the extreme right-wing nature of Pegida.

The photo was posted on Bachmann's own Facebook page and was titled: "He's back!" The Dresden Morgenpost newspaper intercepted and published it, provoking controversy.

In a reply to Bild, Bachmann claimed that the image was a tribute to the comedian Christoph Maria Herbst, who gave the voice to the satirical audiobook that bears the same title "He is back". And that the photo had been shared online by Herbst himself.
