Northwest of the city of Ventura county, more than 3,500 acres have been set on fire by a fire that American media calls "the Maria Fire." Over 1,800 homes are at risk of being destroyed and evacuees are urged to find a roof over their head elsewhere the next night. Schools were closed on Friday.

East of Los Angeles, the fire called "the Hillside Fire" has destroyed over 80 acres of forest and a number of homes on the northern outskirts of San Bernadino.

"Extreme red flag"

The rescue services have managed to contain parts of that fire and so far there are no reports of injuries. But the wind and the dry ground provide good conditions for the fire to continue to spread. Nearly 500 homes are in danger of being destroyed and 1,300 people have had to flee the fire.

The conditions are so bad that the National Weather Service issued the brand new "extreme red flag" warning category.
