After a time of political unrest in Chile, with widespread protests directed at the country's government, President Sebastián Piñera announced this week that the UN climate conference COP25 in Santiago will be suspended.

Several cities have since shown interest in taking over the hosting of the conference. The UN agency UNFCCC can now confirm that it will be the Spanish capital Madrid which is the new host city for the summit.

Sebastián Piñera said, after the announcement that the Santiago meeting would be canceled, that he had spoken to Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez about the matter.

On Thursday, Spain announced that they might be able to arrange the meeting. Today, Friday, Spain announced that they can stand as host country. And now COP25 will be arranged between December 2 and December 13, just as in the original schedule, though in Madrid. Chile will still chair the meeting.

The government confirms

The Swedish government also confirms that the climate meeting COP25 is being moved from Chile to Madrid in Spain. Environment Minister Isabella Lövin's press secretary tells this to DN.

"It is clear that Spain will take over and that the meeting will be held on December 2-13," he told the newspaper.
