Kyrgyz Parliament bans uranium mining

Parliament of Kyrgyzstan approved a bill banning the extraction of uranium and thorium in the country.

“110 deputies out of 111 present voted for the adoption of the bill,” RIA Novosti quoted the press service of the parliament.

The document must be signed by the president of the country.

It is noted that the development of a uranium deposit in the Issyk-Kul region caused a great resonance among the local population and concerns about the possible deterioration of the environmental situation.

Earlier, the company Techsnabexport JSC (part of the Rosatom state corporation) stated that Greenpeace’s allegations of the import of radioactive waste from Russia into Germany are misinformation.
