French judge and city councilor Arash Derambarsh tired of seeing grocery stores and restaurants throwing goods in the garbage, while poor people struggled to get food for the day. A bill and 210,000 signatures later a whole new law was passed in the French Parliament. Since then, ten million meals a year have been saved.

- I cried when the law went through. I cried because I was exposed to many attacks and a lot of pressure. That's when I realized we had managed to get through the change, says Aram Derambarsh.

On Thursday he was awarded the WIN WIN Gothenburg Sustainability Award for his work on fighting food waste. The price is SEK 1 million.

- I would like to thank the City of Gothenburg and everyone else who is involved for this award. I will donate the money to NGOs in France, says Arash Derambarsh.
