Anna Wik Maimu works as a teacher at the Gärdeås school in Ljusdal at half time. At the same time, she is studying for a teacher of 75% and receives SEK 18,000 a month from the municipality. She is one of several teacher students who are part of the initiative that the municipalities in Gävleborg make together with the universities in Gävle and Sundsvall to make more people want to study as teachers.

- For me it was mainly because you have to have a foot in reality at one time. I did not want to let go of working life, but I also wanted to train to be a teacher. It can only be better by getting out into reality at once, she says.

Get applicants despite the offer

In the agreement with the municipality, Anna has committed to work at the same school for one year. A new agreement is then signed if both parties wish to proceed. Since she does not study full-time, the education takes five and a half years. When she is done, she is free to choose another school or municipality.

This investment makes most municipalities in the county. Only Ovanåker and Ockelbo have no student this term. For many municipalities, despite the offer, it has been difficult to get applicants. There were four places in Ljusdal, but there was only one who could sign a contract with, says Carina Bryngelsson, acting administration manager at Ljusdal municipality.

- We had fifteen applicants for the job. But there was only one who had also understood that they also had to apply to college for their terms and came in. I am very surprised that there were no more. I don't know what it is, she says.

Can you continue to offer this next year?

- It all depends on what the colleges say. This is a close collaboration with them and I do not know what their thoughts are after this trial year, says Carina Bryngelsson.

Great opportunities as a teacher

Anna, who recently moved into the municipality and previously worked with leadership in hotels and restaurants, sees endless opportunities with the teaching profession, but has no definite plan for the future.

- For me, five and a half years is a very long time. It is so exciting. I believe and hope that it will change in the school world and I think there will be great opportunities to work both here and elsewhere, but it feels safe and a good idea, ”she says.
