A criminal collegiate chamber in Mexico confirmed Monday the sentence of 47 years in prison to Mexican Jorge Fernández for the murder of his wife, the Spanish Pilar Garrido Santamants, in July 2017.

The decision of this collegiate chamber of the Judiciary of the Mexican state of Tamaulipas ratifies the judgment issued by a trial court last January, said lawyer Jesús Eduardo Govea Orozco.

"This appeal was resolved by the boardroom and the ruling confirms the contested judgment," said Govea Orozco, Fernández's lawyer.

The lawyer told Efe that the confirmation of the sentence was by majority vote, since one of the three magistrates who voted in this case did not agree with the meaning of the sentence issued at the beginning of the year.

As soon as the sentence was confirmed, Jorge Fernández's lawyer went to federal courts to file a direct amparo to request the release of his client , who has been imprisoned since he was charged by the Tamaulipas Prosecutor's Office in August 2017.

Garrido, Valencian, 34, disappeared on July 2, 2017 when she was traveling with her husband and her baby in their car back to Ciudad Victoria after spending a few days on the beach.

At the end of July, bone remains and tattered clothes were found and 15 days later DNA tests identified the Spanish .

Although at first the version of the husband was believed, which claimed that he had been kidnapped, the case took a turn when the State Prosecutor arrested him alleging contradictions in his statements.
