LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A fast-spreading forest fire destroyed at least five million-dollar homes in one of Los Angeles's wealthiest neighborhoods and forced some celebrities to flee at midnight.

One of the neighborhoods ordered to evacuate is the prestigious Brentwood area, which became world-famous in 1994 when former US footballer OJ was charged. Simpson killed his ex-wife and a waiter there.

Today, basketball star LeBron James lives in Brentwood, a group of Hollywood top-tier stars, wealthy producers and media executives.

James, who plays for the Los Angeles Lakers, said he and his wife had to get out of their car early in the morning to find a place to stay after fleeing a house where they lived with their three children.

James bought his eight-bedroom house in Brentwood for $ 23 million in late 2017, according to media reports.

On the northern tip of Brentwood, several million-dollar homes have been turned into rubble along a horrific street decorated for Halloween.

The atmosphere was filled with heavy smoke, while helicopters and tank planes flew from the sky.

The actor and former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said he was among thousands who fled their homes during the night.

The film premiered in Hollywood, kilometers away from the fire. Paramount Pictures said the food to be donated at the event was donated to US Red Cross shelters hosting fleeing fires.
