Kurdish forces in Syria, allies of Washington in the anti-jihadist struggle, have claimed to have been a key piece of intelligence to take US special forces to the hiding place of Abu Bakr al Baghdadi.

A senior Kurdish official has said that an agent they directed helped describe the interior of the complex, its occupants as well as identify Baghdadi properly, stealing an underwear item that belonged to the leader of the Islamic State.

"Our own source, which was able to reach Baghdadi, brought one of its undergarments to perform a DNA test and verify 100% that the person in question was indeed Baghdadi," said Polat Can, senior advisor to the Democratic Forces Sirias (SDS), formed by Kurdish fighters. According to Can, the SDS had been collaborating with the CIA since May.

The president of the United States, Donald Trump , had said that to escape the US forces, Baghdadi took refuge in a tunnel "chased by our dogs." When he was cornered, the jihadist leader "detonated his explosive vest, killing and killing three children," said the president.

The US armed forces congratulated Monday on the death of the founder and spiritual leader of the Islamic State. "His death marks a devastating blow to the remains of (IS)," said US Defense Secretary Mark Esper.

Esper praised the operation that took a hundred US special forces members to a rural complex in the Syrian region of Idlib in helicopters, on a complex mission that needed coordination with Russia, the Kurds, Turkey and the Bashar Asad regime to prevent US aircraft from being attacked.

"They executed the operation in all its facets brilliantly," Esper said.

The Chief of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mark Milley, said that none of the US uniforms were injured in the operation, despite being shot at his arrival. Two men were captured by United States military forces and Baghdadi's body was removed after he committed suicide with explosives.

"The remains of Baghdadi were then transported to a secure facility to confirm their identity with forensic DNA evidence," Milley said.

The remains of the IS leader "were treated appropriately, according to the [military] procedure and according to the laws of armed conflict."

Later, his body was thrown into the sea, reminiscent of the fate of the corpse of Al Qaeda leader Osaba bin Laden, after his assassination by US special forces in 2011.
