“I strongly condemn the attack committed in front of the Bayonne Mosque ... We will do our best to punish the guilty and protect our Muslim fellow citizens. I promise, ”wrote the French leader on his Twitter.

He also emphasized that France "will never tolerate hatred."

Earlier, an 80-year-old man opened fire on parishioners of the Bayonne Mosque and injured two people.

He was later detained in his own home, the motives of the crime are still being investigated.
