WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The body of Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi will be treated in the same way as the United States has dealt with the body of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, US national security adviser Robert O'Brien said.

"His body will be handled properly and the president said Baghdadi died after blowing himself up," O'Brien said in an interview with NBC.

US President Donald Trump on Sunday confirmed Baghdadi's death in a secret operation by US forces overnight in the village of Barisha in the northwestern province of Idlib.

Trump said Baghdadi was killed after he detonated an explosive vest he was wearing after being crammed into a tunnel beneath his apartment complex, noting that he was killed along with three of his children.

He said that the identity of the leader of the Islamic State was identified through the results of tests conducted after the operation, noting that US forces remained on the site for about two hours.

Trump said sensitive documents had been obtained after Baghdadi's death, stressing that his country would continue to "hunt down other terrorists of ISIS."
