For each day that passes, it darkens earlier in the day. And the darker it gets, the more pedestrians are hit by traffic.

- From an ordinary afternoon in October to an afternoon in November, the number of pedestrian pedestrians increases significantly, says Tomas Fredlund, Traffic Safety Analyst at the Swedish Transport Agency.

Light sources disturb the view

One would think that pedestrians are easier to spot where it is most street light. But the fact is that it can be just the opposite.

- You are better at using reflexes in rural areas than in town, but it is often harder to see a pedestrian when there are several light sources, says Håkan Klingborg.

Cyclists have gotten better

However, there is a positive light in the autumn darkness: Cyclists have become more and more aware of the importance of being visible in traffic, says Håkan Klingborg, who has 20 years of experience working as a traffic police.

- This also applies to moped riders and motorcyclists. Partly it has to do with information, and partly I think you have become aware of your own mortality, there have been many accidents, he says.
