Australia's Minna Atherton set a new world record in the 100m backstroke at the International Swimming League (ISL) competition in Budapest on Sunday, becoming the first woman to pass under 55 seconds.

The 19-year-old swam the distance in 54.89 seconds, beating Hungary's Katinka Hosszu's previous best world performance of 55.03 seconds at the 2014 Worlds.

"I'm really happy, especially since I missed it a bit during the relay (earlier in the day)," Atherton said. "It will be exciting to see what will happen in the future," she said.
