As in many other states, voters punish the two national government parties. The CDU receives only 22.5 percent of the vote in Thuringia and the Social Democratic SPD coalition partner receives only 8.5 percent, according to the survey from public service companies ARD and ZDF.

Die Linke is considered to have been helped by the fact that the state's head of government Bodo Ramelow, who belongs to the party, is very popular.

The electoral movement in the state has been unusually aggressive with angry hopes, threatening tone and accusations. CDU candidate Mike Mohring has among other things called the regional AFD leader Björn Höcke "Nazi".

Interest among assessors is great for how the AFD should perform, not least after the terrorist attack on a synagogue in Halle on October 9, where the perpetrator - who killed two people - is suspected to have had extreme right motives.
