An Ifop poll for Le Journal Du Dimanche asked the French about the place of secularism in our society and that of Islam in particular.

ON THE JDD

The Journal Du Dimanche publishes a survey conducted with the Ifop Institute on the French vision of secularism and Islam. The interviews were conducted by self-administered questionnaire online from 24 to 25 October 2019.

Health, the most important theme

It appears first of all that these themes are not among the priorities of the respondents. Indeed, the most important topics are health for 82% of respondents, the fight against unemployment for 67%, the increase in wages and purchasing power for 66%. Next comes the fight against delinquency (65%), the protection of the environment (62%) and the fight against Islamism (56%). Finally, the defense of secularism is the most important theme for 39% of respondents.

But what are we talking about? What is behind this term "secularism"? 22% of French respondents believe that secularism is to ensure freedom of conscience, 19% believe that it is to put all religions on an equal footing, 27% believe that secularism means separating religions and politics and 26% say that secularism must reduce the influence of religions in our society. 6% think it's none of that. Still, 78% of respondents believe secularism is threatened.
