In Sörmland, there are just over 100 nature reserves already. And the county receives an average of four, five new nature reserves annually.

- It is important to protect the valuable nature areas that remain, so it is certainly fun with two new nature reserves in Sörmland, says Peter Lantz at the nature conservation unit at the county administrative board.

High natural value

The Lerbo-Biesta nature reserve in Katrineholm municipality consists mostly of coniferous forest with rich fungal flora. The nature reserve of Åsbyås is a historical pasture site.

In order for an area to become a nature reserve, the site must have a combination of high natural values and the opportunity for outdoor activities.

Take time

- There must be good arguments to protect these areas, and it is a work that takes time. Åsbyåsen nature reserve in Strängnäs municipality has been open for discussion for a safe 30 years. Lerbo-Biesta in Katrineholm has been running for four, five years, so it takes time.

Next in line to become a nature reserve is the Ehrendal forest area to the south of Gnesta, where a decision must be made before the New Year.
