It was Tuesday that unrest broke out in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa and other parts of the Oromia region. In the past two days, at least 67 people are reported to have been killed, Reuters reports, referring to the regional police chief. Of the dead, five should be police officers.

The reason for the violent protests is that prominent activist Jawar Mohammed has accused security forces of mobilizing an attack against him, reports AFP.

Jawar Mohammed belongs to the Oromo people group, just like Prime Minister and Peace Prize laureate Abiy Ahmed. But lately he has criticized the Prime Minister's policy.

Burned the Prime Minister's book

Supporters of Jawar Mohammed have protested against the Prime Minister this week, including by burning up Abiy Ahmed's new book. The unrest has since escalated during the week. According to Amnesty International investigator Fisseha Tekle, the protests have resulted in clashes between ethnic and religious groups, AFP reports.

Jawar Mohammed says, according to AFP, that he does not rule out running for election next year and believes Abiy Ahmed's leadership style is starting to resemble a dictatorship

"Threatening is the beginning of an authoritarian regime," Jawar Mohammed told AFP.

Abiy Ahmed was recently awarded the Nobel Peace Prize "for his efforts to achieve peace and international cooperation and especially for his decisive initiative to resolve the border conflict with neighboring Eritrea", according to the Nobel Committee.
