Peter Sagan, the Slovak world champion from 2015 to 2017, will participate next year for the first time in the Tour of Italy, announced Thursday his team Bora.

"Italy holds a special place in my heart, where I won my first world champion title in 2008 (junior mountain bike), which I spent the first years of my career. Professional in an Italian team (Liquigas), "said Sagan on the occasion of the presentation of the Giro 2020 in Milan.

"On May 9, I will be on the starting line in Budapest," added Sagan. "With the Great Start and the first three stages in Hungary, the Giro will also allow me to run close to Slovakia."

The Slovak, who will be 30 years old next year, will also take part in the Tour de France, which he holds the record (seven) victories in the points classification (green jersey).

"I've always said that Peter's racing program will change in the future," said Bora's director Ralph Denk, referring to the Giro's cyclamen points standings. "A champion like Peter must, in my opinion, be at the Giro at least once in his career".

In May, Sagan had been used to running the California Tour until the end of the post-classic break before the Tour de Suisse.
