A team of seven high school students has created a robot that cleans water surfaces that can be remotely controlled using Wi-Fi.

Mohammed Fathi, a computer science teacher at the school, supervised the project, Mohamed Fathi, told Emirates Today that the team received 450 intensive training hours within 45 days in preparation for the World Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Championship, the First Global Challenge. It has more than 1,500 competitors from 191 countries.

He added that the UAE team consists of five students from Rashid bin Saeed School: Hamad Saeed, Abdullah Jawdat, Abdul Rahman Abdullah, Ghazi Salem Al Sharif and Mohammed Yasser, and two students from Dibba Fujairah School: Shawq Saeed Al-Dhanhani and Sheikha Ali Al-Saridi.

He explained that the robot consists of aluminum material and eight power generators and electronic devices, all connected to the remote control via «WiFi», to run remotely, pointing out that the robot is distinct from other water cleaning devices that it is faster than others, and can sort the waste extracted Of water.

Fathi said that the prototype of the robot cost $ 1800, and took 45 days to implement, pointing out that the team members are superior in computer science, design and technology, creativity and innovation, which allowed them to accomplish the robot in this short period with high efficiency.

For her part, student Sheikha Ali Alsuraidi, that the training helped them in the theoretical and practical preparation for the challenge in the championship, stressing that the quest to raise the name of the UAE in a global competition, was motivated to participate.

Student Hamad Saeed said that his role was to build and maintain the robot, stressing that he is excited to participate in the tournament, which will start today, in addition to his concern because they represent the country in front of 1500 competitors. Ghazi Salem Al-Sharif said that he is the robot controller and has the ability to perform maintenance when needed. He said that the training, which was conducted on a weekly basis, helped them to prepare the technical and psychological to take on the global challenge. He hopes to finish high school to join aviation engineering. The student Mohamed Yasser Abdul Hai, said that his task in the team is limited to building and designing robot and conducting periodic maintenance operations, explaining that the team has the capabilities and skills to qualify to win and compete strongly during the global challenge. The student Abdullah Jawdat confirmed that this third participation in the field of artificial intelligence and robot, as he represented the UAE in other global competitions, and the UAE team ranked second in the world.
