Unpopular bill in Hong Kong is closed down

The Hong Kong government has formally withdrawn the bill allowing extradition of suspected criminals to the central government of China, which triggered huge protests in the semi-autonomous city.

The protests, which have been going on since June, have meanwhile widened to demands for democracy reform and have become increasingly violent. On Wednesday, Hong Kong's security chief announced that the bill that started it all is now being withdrawn.
