Nearly a month after the Lubrizol factory fire in Rouen, the treatment of damaged barrels begins this Wednesday, October 23, 2019. At the same time, the director general of Lubrizol was heard by the Senate, Tuesday, October 22.

The treatment of damaged drums promises to be a delicate operation. It is a question of moving these drums remained on the site and which contain dangerous substances. In total, 160 drums damaged but not destroyed by the flames will be moved.

They contain a substance that can give rise to hydrogen sulfide fumes if heated. This gas is extremely dangerous and highly toxic.

A treatment that will take months

Heard by the Senate's inquiry committee on Tuesday afternoon, Eric Schnur, managing director of Lubrizol , returned to the treatment of damaged casks. He assures, by the voice of his translator, that the necessary will be done in total security:

" We will call in specialists to make sure there are no odor problems. We built an enclosure, a sort of tent, that prevents the spread of odors. There will be a robot that will be used to move each drum, to put them in a pen. It will take months. We will take the necessary time and do it in the best safety conditions. "

In parallel with this clean-up operation of the damaged site, the general director of Lubrizol reaffirmed, under oath, that the products went up in smoke posed no threat to health.
