JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli President Reuven Rivlin has charged former White House chief of staff Benny Gantz with the formation of the next government, after none of the parliamentary factions objected on Tuesday.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Monday the re-delegation of his mandate to form the next government to the Israeli president, after he failed to gather enough Knesset members to join the coalition government.

This is the second time in a year and a half that Netanyahu has failed to form a government following a general election, leaving Israel in a state of political paralysis.

Gantz has 28 days to complete the difficult task of forming a government. If Gantz fails too, the president will tell the Knesset speaker that there is no possibility of forming a government. In this case, the 120-member Knesset will have the opportunity to gather the support of 61 Knesset members to choose a candidate.

Members of the Knesset will have 21 days to do so, and if they fail, the Knesset will have to be dissolved again and new elections will be held.
