WASHINGTON (Reuters) - US President Donald Trump has said he would have earned him between $ 2 billion and $ 5 billion if he continued to run his business instead of breaking into politics.

"If I have to do it again, I will immediately," he told reporters.

Trump was alarmed that he had to cancel his decision to organize the G7 summit in June at his Trump National Doral golf resort in Miami.

His plan to organize the event at his resort has drawn strong criticism from Republicans and Democrats, who said it gave the impression he would profit from being president.

Trump dismissed what he called the "false bonus clause" in the US Constitution, which bars the president and lawmakers from profiting from office, and critics have repeatedly accused Trump of violating the clause.

Trump ran his resorts around the world before being elected president, and his sons largely ran family businesses.

"Whether I lose $ 2 billion, $ 5 billion or less, I don't care, I don't care," Bush said. "I do it for the country. I do it for the people."

Trump has indicated that he will host the G7 summit at his resort at no cost to the US taxpayer, but is now looking for other places. "I don't think it will be the same," he said.
