October 22, 20199.21 The emperor of Japan, Naruhito, ascended to the throne of the Chrysanthemum, with an elaborate ceremony during which he proclaimed his enthronement at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo. The rituals began this morning under the rainfall. The emperor, who took office on May 1st after the abdication of his father Akihito, accompanied by the empress Masako, announced to the ancestors the ascension to the throne.
