INTERVIEW

Today in France, at the entrance to the sixth grade, one in two children can not swim: this is the statement made by the Secours populaire. For the holidays of All Saints, the French association of fight against social injustices launches the 6th edition of its annual operation "Like a fish in the water" to help 630 young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to access the courses of aquatic centers (from October 28 to November 1, 2019).

"Many children do not have access to the pool or water activities because of the precariousness of their situation," says Europe 1 Thierry Robert, secretary general of Secours populaire.

Drowning, a leading cause of death among people under 15

Drowning is the leading cause of life-threatening death among people under 15 years of age. Thanks to Secours populaire, each child will have 5 sessions to learn the basics of swimming and leave with a diploma.

"There are schools that organize swimming lessons in the cities where we have reception centers but there are still children who do not have the opportunity to have lessons in due form," says Thierry Robert.
