In South Sudan, this week-end, new direct talks in Juba between President Salva Kiir and Riek Machar have led to a new deadlock. The rebel leader will take part in a national unity government on November 12, but both sides oppose several points. For their part, the religious decided to throw a pavement in the pond.

After two days of meetings , South Sudanese Catholic leaders have used diplomatic but firm terms through which everyone takes a little for his rank. The church wonders " why peace efforts focus on the sharing of power between individuals, instead of attacking the roots of conflict. "A sentence that questions the foundations of the negotiations and the very content of the peace agreement, in which the distribution of positions between the parties was millimetered.

For the researcher Klem Ryan, the international community has focused on the distribution of portfolios and " neglected everything that a lasting peace needs ". Catholics cite the example of " governance, poverty, national identity or even conflicts between communities for resources ". The Church thanks the countries of the region for their efforts, before tackling them by saying " knowing that some had economic interests that could undermine their impartiality ".

Both sides singled out

The South Sudanese policies are put back to back. " We are worried about their level of fear. We ask them to repent of their failures, "says the text.

As for the continuation of the negotiations, the ecclesiastics consider that the formation of a government of union " must not be an end in itself. There must be conditions, they say, that the talks are truly inclusive . " A sentence that advocates for a further postponement of the formation of the Union Government in which Riek Machar is to occupy the position of Senior Vice President. The rebel leader has also asked for an extension of three months.
