The witch "Maleficent" dispossessed this weekend the ominous "Joker" of the first place of a North American box office already passed on Halloween, according to the final figures released Monday by the specialized company Exhibitor Relations.
"Maleficent: The Power of Evil" has collected for its release nearly $ 37 million from Friday to Sunday in theaters of the United States and Canada.
The famous Disney Witch, starring Angelina Jolie, who shares the bill with Elle Fanning and Michelle Pfeiffer, is back five years after the first installment, which was twice as profitable.
It dethrones another character torn between good and evil, the "Joker", and its descent into hell brought to the screen by a huge Joaquin Phoenix.
In the lead for two weeks, Batman's best enemy fell to second place despite his $ 29.2 million in weekend receipts.
Another novelty - and another sequel - completes the podium with $ 26.8 million: "Back to Zombieland", half-comedy, half-horror film about a world infested with zombies to which a casting attack rich in stars (Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg ...).
Also in season as Halloween approaches (31 October), the new adventures of "The Addams Family", animated film version this time, complete with 16.3 million this dark quartet, in front of "Gemini Man" and its 8.3 million.
This action movie with Will Smith was directed by Ang Lee, who is credited with "The Brokeback Mountain Secret" (2005) and "Tiger and Dragon" (2000).
