Emmanuel Macron proposed Friday the creation of "a high authority of the transparency of public life" in the European Union after the controversy created by the rejection of the candidate from Paris to the Commission by MEPs.

Speaking at the end of a European summit in Brussels, the French president described as "dysfunction" and "political crisis" the decision taken by the European Parliament to reject Sylvie Goulard.

"If we politicize this process, we will destroy it," said the head of the French state, which must present new names to the elected President of the Commission Ursula von der Leyen to replace Ms. Goulard.

"Some have proposed, I support this proposal, a high authority for the transparency of European public life," said Macron, adding that this body should be "independent", "not politicized".

"There have been political settlements between families in Parliament," said the president, who met Friday morning with Ms. von der Leyen, as well as heads of state and government representing the three major European political families .

MEPs have flunked for ethical reasons the French candidate, under a judicial inquiry in France.

Mr. Macron said that Ms. Goulard's "vulnerabilities" "have been used for political purposes".
