The G5 Sahel countries want to "boost" the action of their border police to better fight against arms trafficking and terrorism. This is the main conclusion that emerges from a meeting of law enforcement officials held in Nouakchott under the leadership of German cooperation.

In the fight against terrorism, there are the military, but also the police forces. Since 2017, border police have been asked to strengthen surveillance between the G5 Sahel countries. Police officers closer to the local population and who must work to better involve civilians to meet the security challenge.

" As far as the border police are concerned, these will be joint border awareness actions to bring together opinion leaders, including religious leaders, defense and security forces, transport operators, all those who are on both sides of the border, "says Kaka Abdoulaye, the coordinator of the G5 Sahel security cooperation platform.

The approach is aimed primarily at the borders of the countries most affected by terrorism and all illicit trafficking, adds Kaka Abdoulaye: " Around the major problems such as terrorism that exists between Niger and Burkina Faso , between the Mali and Burkina, there is organized crime, fraud. It is clear that terrorism feeds on trafficking that is maintained : drug trafficking, arms trafficking, even livestock trafficking. "

It is the German cooperation that finances this safety training program for West Africa and the Sahel.
