The death toll from an attack on a mosque in Afghanistan has risen to 62 dead and 33 wounded, said spokesman of the governor of Nangarhar province, Attaullah Khogyani. A previous report stated 28 dead and 55 wounded.

"Explosives that were placed inside the mosque were triggered," said Attaullah Khogyani.

The Taliban condemned the attack, which they blamed on government forces or the Islamic State organization.

The Afghan insurgents and the Islamic State group are located in Nangarhar, a border province of Pakistan. The district of Haska Mina, also called Deh Bala, is close to this border.

"It was a big explosion," said Haji Amanat Khan, who lives in the area. "The roof of the mosque fell as a result of the explosion."

On Thursday, a UN report lamented an unprecedented number of casualties for more than a decade in the third quarter of the year as Afghanistan continued to sink into "totally unacceptable" violence.

Between 1 July and 30 September, the UN mission in Afghanistan recorded 1,174 civilians killed and 3,139 injured, according to its quarterly report.

The month of July, with 425 deaths recorded, was also the worst in a decade.
